ThingLink Certified

ThingLink Certified Trainer achieved in April 2026. I have supported many colleagues at the University of Southampton to create their own ThingLinks and as a certified trainer I hope to support many more people to find better ways to present their content in a digital world of just-in-time learning.

ThingLink Certified Creator completed in May 2022. Reviewed in 2026 and additional AR module completed.

Some thoughts on the Pedagogy of ThingLinks

The pedagogy of learning through exploring ThingLink infographics can be explained by Jerome Bruner’s constructivist description of discovery learning, paired with the work of Piaget, and Vygotsky’s ‘Zone of Proximal Development’ and the use of scaffolding, breaking learning down into manageable bites at an appropriate level.

By creating a ThingLink for students to use, the level of complexity can be set to the specific needs of a particular year group. Relying instead on an internet search might return information at every level from PhD to conspiracy theories.

My teaching experience is mostly at further and higher education level, where ThingLink fits well into Self-Directed Learning theory, popularised by Malcolm Knowles, author of ‘Androgogy’ which makes the rather bold claim that ‘only the andragogical model can provide guidelines for coping with changing learning situations resulting from electronic delivery of educational services.’

Adult learning is often a process where individuals take the initiative to diagnose their own needs, set goals, identify resources, and evaluate outcomes, with or without assistance. It promotes personal autonomy and lifelong learning, shifting responsibility from teacher to learner. Adults also favour ‘just-in-time’ learning, choosing what to learn next when they have a motivation of need, which is something a ThingLink can satisfy well.

Creating their own ThingLink infographics moves the conversation from Constructivism to the Constructionism of Seymour Papert and ‘bricolage’ – a learning environment where students are encouraged to explore and problem-solve through hands-on activities.

I can see few ways for a student or teacher to provide better evidence of Bloom’s ‘synthesis’ than by creating a well-designed and populated ThingLink, and by becoming a ThingLink certified trainer I hope to help others to create their own ThingLinks.

ThingLink presentation of 3D model

I am working on a wooden stockade fort for wargaming miniatures – a project supported by this Blender Mastered course. I have some experience teaching games design and here are examples of my online course materials and a test game made in 3ds Max and Unity.

AR app

This image worked well printed out as an example for my online presentation at the University showing the capabilities of the ThingLink AR app. I will be supporting a friend’s PhD art exhibition with the AR app.

All models 3D printed and painted by me for the Egyptian episodes of my Imps! animation project. The dog-headed soldier of Anubis was made in Heroforge, the column was designed by Iain Lovecraft.

VR

Our family has a pair of Meta Quest headsets and I will be creating stereo images and 360° images both photographically and from Blender + Unity to expand this section soon!

3D Capture app

I am exploring the ThingLink Capture app to present my 3D printed models and was pleased to hear in the Webinar that a turn-table mode is in the pipeline.

ThingLink tag types

Just to cover all the basics, an example of each of the tags with guided mode on, making the next symbol in the sequence larger.
