Video shooting and editing

Experienced with video cameras and DSLRs from Blackmagic, Canon, Sony, and Panasonic. I have taught video, editing, sound and animation in FE colleges, led workshops, and produced my own stop-motion animations.

A large part of my Digital Resources Developer role at the University of Southampton (2019-2026) has been recording and editing events; pieces to camera; live-streaming conferences and a theatre play; subtitles and accessibility. These videos featuring students and interns were shot, edited and subtitled by me, directed by Kate Borthwick and featured on the University of Southampton’s public Website.

An example of a pre-recorded video, with logos overlaid by me in post-production using Adobe Premiere Pro. The learning objective was for the students to get their project work online so that I could provide feedback and the examination board could confirm their grades. I 3D-printed the figurine at the start and used the same file (after decimating it to make it small enough for an online game) in the simple Imps! Egypt Unity project that I created for demonstration purposes (use the mouse/trackpad plus the W, A, S and D keys to navigate).

I enjoy filming live music and working with musicians. Editing “Laundromat” included an exploration of some of the features in the free version of DaVinci Resolve – since upgraded to the full Resolve Studio. Other videos on this page edited were with Adobe Premiere Pro.

I was second camera for director Mike Last on a multi-date tour by Nick Harper that became Nick’s DVD “Love is Music”

Animation

Stop-motion animation using video cameras, puppets, Plasticine and Dragonframe or iStopmotion software. I have assisted with about three hundred short animations while teaching in colleges and during our my-animation workshops with children, people with autism, cerebral palsy and/or wheelchair users. Here are two of my own, the first as a pitch for Blutack’s ‘Clean and Safe’ campaign, the second working with my then 12-year-old son Jamie.

Jamie has gone on to win awards and gain an MA in animation. He voiced and made the Skwits models and acted out the moves.
