Change Viewport Background

Press Alt-b or Choose Views > Viewport Background > Configure Viewport Background select Use Files and find your file…
Click Apply to Active View at the bottom and then press g to hide (or show) your grid
Choose Views > Viewport Background > Custom Image File or Gradient Color to switch the image on or off.
