Generative AI Videos

Using GenAI in your studies at the University of Southampton

Context

Experienced with video cameras and DSLRs from Blackmagic, Canon, Sony, and Panasonic. I have taught video, editing, sound and animation in FE colleges, led workshops, and produced my own stop-motion animations.

A large part of my Digital Resources Developer role at the University of Southampton (2019-2026) has been recording and editing events; pieces to camera; live-streaming conferences and a theatre play; subtitles and accessibility. These videos featuring students and interns were shot, edited and subtitled by me, directed by Kate Borthwick and featured on the University of Southampton’s public Website.

My contribution

I filmed three videos on Using Generative AI in 4K using Blackmagic and Sony cameras, adding lower thirds, some text overlays and the University logo at the end in Adobe Premiere.

Shooting outside in Valley Gardens at the University of Southampton brought issues with changing lighting conditions (resolved in the edit) and frequent interruptions due to planes flying over, builders drilling and passing sirens. Those that could still be heard were removed with the AI audio clean-up tools within Adobe Premiere.

Once the videos had been approved by the Generative Artificial Intelligence working group and the branding had been passed by external communications I rendered the final videos, generated and edited the subtitles to meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines and then hosted the videos on our department’s YouTube channel.

Feedback

“Claire wanted me to feed back that she watched the earlier video drafts and thought they were  excellent  from a user experience design perspective.

Maybe a sad state of affairs to be saying this with a tone of pleasant surprise but… it is quite rare to see UoS-commissioned videos hitting all the marks like this! So massive well done to you – and to all of us for putting together this work!”

Kate Borthwick Professor of Digital Education, chair of the Generative Artificial Intelligence working group which is developing policy and practice in relation to GenAI tools and Academic Lead for GenAI in Education.

Appendix

This video was one of three. Its siblings consist of an introductory video and a discussion video which was particularly hard to film single-handed and a complicated edit. It drew elements from two takes, each with its own sound track for each of the four contributors.

In my role at the University I shot and edited many pieces to camera, usually cut to bite-sized responses of about two minutes. These were shot in our green-screen studio with vibrant backgrounds added in Adobe Premiere. I later chose less overpowering images, often slightly blurred and desaturated to reduce distraction from the speaker.
